The Tank family was born in 1917, when Louis Cartier designed a rectangular case inspired, according to the maison's own tradition, by the aerial view of the Renault FT combat tanks he had seen parade during World War I. Since then, the Tank name has served as an umbrella for dozens of rectangular-case variants with varying degrees of ornamentation: from the more classic Tank Louis Cartier to the integrated-bracelet Tank Française.
The Tank Solo line was introduced as the most restrained and accessible execution of that family: it keeps the rectangular case and Roman-numeral dial characteristic of the Tank, but drops decorative elements such as the "chemin de fer" guilloché (the fine railway-track pattern bordering the dial on the Louis Cartier) and offers quartz movement instead of mechanical in most of its executions, including this reference WSTA0028.
