Cartier's original Roadster debuted in 2001, taking its name from 1950s two-seater convertible sports cars and echoing their rounded, aerodynamic lines — a nod to models like the Porsche 356 Speedster — in its tonneau-shaped silhouette. The family was discontinued in 2012 after eleven years of production, which over time fueled growing collector demand for surviving pieces on the secondary market.
At Watches & Wonders 2026, Cartier unveiled the Roadster's return after fourteen years away, refined by a team of over a hundred artisans. The new collection arrives in two sizes — medium (M) and large (L) — and three materials: steel, solid yellow gold and two-tone steel-and-gold. The execution covered here, the WSRD0019, is the medium steel version.
The design keeps the original model's recognizable DNA: the dial's concentric rings echo a speedometer, the Cyclops lens over the date evokes a cockpit gauge window, and Cartier's secret signature remains hidden within the Roman numeral VII. The notably fluted, oversized crown preserves the nod to mid-20th-century American car taillights that has defined the Roadster since its origin.
Changes from the original model include a redesigned bracelet with shorter, more ergonomic links finished in a mix of brushed and polished surfaces, plus the addition of Cartier's QuickSwitch system, which lets the metal bracelet be swapped for the included leather strap without tools. The medium steel execution with a white dial ships with an additional semi-matte navy blue alligator strap.
The medium size runs the automatic Caliber 1899 MC, a slim in-house Cartier movement with 38 to 40 hours of power reserve; the large size, not covered in this fiche, runs Caliber 1847 MC, introduced in 2015.
