The Drive de Cartier family was introduced at the SIHH in January 2016 as the first new men's Cartier model in years whose design did not draw directly from Louis Cartier's historical sketches, instead adopting a language inspired by the world of sports cars: the dial's guilloché pattern evokes a radiator grille, and the small seconds subdial at 6 o'clock recalls an odometer. Even so, it retains the brand's recognizable codes, such as blued-steel hands.
In 2017, Cartier added an ultra-thin version to the family, the Drive Extra-Flat, initially available only in white and pink gold. A year later, in 2018, the manufacture surprised by also launching a steel version — the one this reference, WSNM0011, corresponds to — at a launch price of €5,650, nearly €10,000 below its gold siblings.
The 39mm cushion case measures just 6.6mm thick, placing the Drive Extra-Flat among ultra-thin watches in its category, though not reaching the extremes of concept pieces like Piaget's Altiplano Ultimate Concept.
