The perpetual calendar has been part of the Royal Oak since 1978, when Audemars Piguet introduced reference 5548, the first series-produced automatic wristwatch with this complication. Since then, the manufacture has repeatedly renewed the caliber powering this execution, adapting it to different cases and diameters within the integrated family Gérald Genta designed in 1972.
In 2025, Audemars Piguet introduced the new generation of the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Selfwinding around the in-house Calibre 7138, which replaces the 5133 used in the previous generation. The new movement, ultra-thin and based on the automatic Calibre 7121, incorporates a perpetual-calendar module derived from the RD#2 technology the brand developed for its slimmer executions of this complication — with the notable feature that every correction (day, date, month, leap year) is now performed directly via the crown, with no auxiliary pushers on the caseband.
The 41mm case, 9.5mm thick, retains the octagonal bezel with visible white gold screws that has identified the Royal Oak since its origin, now rated to 50 meters of water resistance, up from the previous generation. The blue Grande Tapisserie dial extends its tone to the calendar sub-dials and inner bezel, while the moon-phase disc reproduces, per the brand's own claim, an actual photographic image of the lunar surface taken by NASA.
Alongside the steel reference covered here, Audemars Piguet simultaneously introduced a 'sand gold' execution (26674SG) at a higher price, plus two 150-piece limited editions that add a vintage Audemars Piguet signature over the moon phase and a special caseback engraving, otherwise identical in specification to the regular-production versions.
