History

The Royal Oak Offshore was born in 1993 as the larger, sportier counterpart to Gérald Genta's original 1972 Royal Oak, widening the case diameter and reinforcing the octagonal bezel's visual language with its eight hexagonal screws. The chronograph version quickly became the family's most recognizable execution.

In September 2021, Audemars Piguet unveiled a complete overhaul of the 43mm Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph, with a new in-house caliber, the 4401, replacing the previous generation's chronograph engine with an integrated movement featuring flyback function — allowing the stopwatch to be reset without stopping it first — developed entirely in-house.

The steel case pairs with a black ceramic bezel and new ceramic pushers and crown, with a more ergonomic design than earlier generations. The dial adopts a redesigned Méga Tapisserie pattern, with repositioned chronograph counters and a new applied AP logo, while the date window moves to 4:30 to avoid interfering with the new counter layout.

The Calibre 4401 measures 32mm in diameter by 6.8mm thick, with 367 components and 40 jewels, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers roughly 70 hours of power reserve, alongside the usual functions of hours, minutes, small seconds, date, and a chronograph with 12-hour and 30-minute counters.

This generation also introduces an interchangeable strap system built into the buckle and case studs, allowing tool-free swaps between rubber straps in various colors and leather alternatives. Reference 26420SO.OO.A002CA.01, in steel with a black ceramic bezel and black dial, launched alongside other executions in titanium, 18k pink gold and grey ceramic bezels, all sharing the same Calibre 4401.
