The 37mm Royal Oak is a relatively recent addition to the family Gerald Genta designed in 1972: Audemars Piguet introduced this unisex diameter in 2012, to mark the model's 40th anniversary. In 2022, coinciding with the Royal Oak's 50th anniversary, the manufacture updated the entire 34, 37, 38, and 41mm Selfwinding range with a new engine — Calibre 5900, made by Vaucher for Audemars Piguet, replacing the previous Calibre 3120.
The movement swap wasn't merely cosmetic. Calibre 5900 measures 3.9mm thick versus the outgoing 3120's 4.26mm, which let Audemars Piguet trim overall case height from 9.8mm to 9mm on this reference while keeping the 37mm diameter unchanged. The new caliber also brought a 4Hz beat rate and a 60-hour power reserve, with Haute Horlogerie finishing visible through the sapphire case back.
The 15550ST.OO.1356ST.04 wears a light blue dial with the Grande Tapisserie pattern that has visually identified the Royal Oak since its creation, paired with applied white gold luminous hour markers, matching hands, and a date window at 3 o'clock with a tone-on-tone background. The tonneau-shaped octagonal stainless steel case, with the eight hexagonal bezel screws that define the design, keeps the 50m water resistance typical of this line — built as a daily sports watch rather than a dive tool.
