Heuer — today TAG Heuer — introduced the Monaco in 1969 as one of the world's first automatic chronographs, part of the consortium that also developed the Chronomatic caliber (Calibre 11), formed with Breitling, Büren, and Dubois-Dépraz. Its square case was a rarity at the time, when the vast majority of wristwatches used round cases.
The model reached icon status when Steve McQueen wore it in the 1971 film 'Le Mans', playing race driver Michael Delaney; that association turned the Monaco into one of the Swiss house's most recognizable references.
In 2019, coinciding with the model's 50th anniversary, TAG Heuer replaced the historic Calibre 11 with its first in-house chronograph movement for the Monaco, the Heuer 02: an automatic caliber with a column wheel and vertical clutch, 33 jewels, and 80 hours of power reserve.
