The Cosmograph Daytona was born in 1963 as a tool watch for racing drivers, taking its name from Daytona Beach, Florida, home of the 24 Hours of Daytona, a race Rolex has sponsored since 1962. For decades, the solid-gold execution with contrasting dial and counters was one of the family's most sought-after configurations, long before the steel model became the waiting-list phenomenon it is today.
In 2023, Rolex overhauled the Daytona family: a new Caliber 4131 (replacing the 4130, in production from 1988-2000 and then refined through 2023), a redesigned case with reshaped lugs and a slightly different bezel profile, and the extension of the black Cerachrom bezel to the yellow-gold and Everose-gold versions, which had previously typically featured an engraved metal bezel.
