The Speedmaster first reached space in 1965, when NASA certified it for all its crewed missions after subjecting chronographs from several brands to extreme heat, cold, vacuum, and vibration testing. On July 21, 1969, Buzz Aldrin wore it on his wrist as he stepped onto the lunar surface during the Apollo 11 mission, giving rise to its commercial nickname, "Moonwatch."
Caliber 1861, fitted to this reference, is an evolution of Caliber 861 introduced in 1996 and based, like the whole family, on the storied Lemania 1873. It's a manually wound, rhodium-finished movement that Omega kept in production for 25 years, until replacing it in 2021 with Caliber 3861, which carries Master Chronometer certification (resistance to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss) and a sapphire crystal instead of hesalite.
This reference 311.30.42.30.01.005, with Caliber 1861 and a hesalite crystal, represents the execution closest to the original specification NASA certified in the 1960s: hesalite, a type of acrylic, was preferred over sapphire precisely because, although it scratches more easily, it doesn't shatter into sharp fragments if it cracks — a real risk in the vacuum of space. Many collectors and purists still prefer this hesalite/Caliber 1861 version over the current sapphire/Caliber 3861 one for that historical fidelity.
