The Ingenieur was originally introduced in 1955 as an antimagnetic professional watch, but the reference that shapes the current generation is the 1976 Ingenieur SL ref. 1832, designed by Gérald Genta: an integrated bracelet case, a screwed bezel with five visible screws, and a steel sport-watch language sharing genetic code with other Genta designs of the same decade.
In 2023, IWC introduced the Ingenieur Automatic 40, a direct revision of that Genta design: a 40mm case with the same five-recess aligned bezel and integrated bracelet, now powered by the in-house 32111 caliber, which delivers 120 hours of power reserve thanks to a twin-barrel system. The soft-iron inner case shields the movement from magnetic fields, a feature that ties back to the Ingenieur's original technical purpose in the 1950s.
