History

The watchmaking tradition of Glashütte, the small Saxon town where the manufacture is based, dates back to 1845, when Ferdinand Adolph Lange and other watchmakers settled there to found an industry that would go on to rival the great Swiss watchmaking centers. After the Second World War and the subsequent nationalization of the workshops under East Germany, Glashütte Original as a modern commercial brand was established in 1994, following German reunification, carrying forward the technical legacy of those historical workshops. It is now owned by the Swatch Group.

The Senator collection is the manufacture's classical watchmaking line, and within it, the Senator Excellence — introduced in 2016 — represents its most refined execution: a restrained case, a three-hand dial, and the Panorama Date, the two-disc concentric calendar system Glashütte Original patented, which allows an instantaneous date jump at midnight, unlike single-disc calendars that change progressively.

This reference, 1-36-03-01-02-30, runs the in-house Caliber 36-03, an automatic movement developed and manufactured entirely in Glashütte, with a silicon balance spring — a material that reduces the movement's sensitivity to magnetic fields compared with traditional steel — and a skeletonized rotor with a 21ct gold oscillating weight. Its power reserve exceeds 100 hours, nearly double what's typical for a three-hand automatic, thanks to a twin-barrel system.

The dial, in a fine-grained (grainé) silver tone, pairs laser-engraved indexes with a railroad-style minute track and blued, pear-shaped hands, an aesthetic vocabulary that echoes the German watchmaking tradition of the late 19th century. With 50 meters of water resistance and an alligator leather strap on a deployant buckle, the Senator Excellence Panorama Date is positioned as a high-manufacture dress watch, not a sport piece.

This is the first Glashütte Original reference Cazador adds, extending the catalog to a second high-end German manufacture alongside A. Lange & Söhne, Nomos Glashütte, and Sinn already present, and representing Saxony's watchmaking tradition under Swatch Group ownership.

It's the brand's patented calendar system, made of two concentric discs at 4 o'clock that allow an instantaneous date jump at midnight, instead of the progressive change seen in single-disc calendars.

How far back does watchmaking in Glashütte go?

The tradition dates to 1845, when Ferdinand Adolph Lange and other watchmakers settled in this Saxon town. Glashütte Original as a modern commercial brand was established in 1994, after German reunification.

It exceeds 100 hours (roughly 4 days), thanks to a twin-barrel system, nearly double what's typical for a three-hand automatic.

Is the Senator Excellence Panorama Date suitable for swimming?

Why does it use a silicon balance spring?

Silicon reduces the movement's sensitivity to magnetic fields compared with traditional steel, improving precision stability in everyday use.
